Neighbouring Rotherham dates back as far as the Iron Age, and becoming a market town during Saxon times. The town boomed during the Industrial Revolution thanks to the local iron and steel industry, while the Beatson Clark & Co glassmaking factory was a big employer from the mid 18th century onwards.
Business and industry
Beatson Clark are still one of the biggest businesses in Rotherham, while other local employers include Irwin Mitchell, Wilko Retail, Aviva and the local steel works.
