A quick history
Evidence of life in Rotherham dates back to the Iron Age, while there are Roman remains around the town. In the Middle Ages, the town grew around the river, and Rotherham quickly became known for its markets, which by the 14th century took place several times a week. Jesus College was built in the 15th century, but closed in 1547 and left to go to ruins.
Industry in Rotherham centred around iron for many centuries, and the discovery of coal brought big changes to the area during the Industrial Revolution. Inland waterways were built for better transportation, and the iron and steel industries continued to boom until the 20th century. Rotherham was also known for flour milling, right up until the early 21st century.

Rotherham is home to a number of big businesses, including Beatson Clark & Co glass manufacturers who have been in the town for more than 250 years. Manufacturing is still important in the area, with companies including Rolls Royce and Sandvik Cormorant based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

If you’re a football fan, you can watch Rotherham United play their home matches at New York Stadium. Rotherham Titans rugby team play at Clifton Lane, while sporting facilities in the local area include Awesome Walls Climbing Centre and Rotherham Golf Club.
For a breath of fresh air, you can take the kids to play at Clifton Park, wander through the grounds of Boston Castle, or go hiking in the Peak District National Park nearby. Other attractions in and around Rotherham include Minster Gardens, Wincobank Hill and Woolley Woods.
Travel and commuting
If you’re commuting for work or visiting friends and family, Rotherham is well-connected by road and rail. The M1 and M18 motorways pass close to the town, while there are regular train services into Sheffield and beyond.
Travelling by train, the journey to Sheffield from Rotherham takes just 10 minutes, while the car journey takes 20 minutes depending on traffic. Doncaster is a 25-minute train journey or 30-minute drive from the town, while Leeds can be reached in 40 minutes by car or one hour by train.
York and Nottingham are both less than one hour’s drive from Rotherham, and Manchester can be reached in one hour 10 minutes by either train or car. When you’re going on holiday, Doncaster Sheffield Airport is only a 30-minute drive away.
