New Homes in Rotherham

Welcome to Rotherham

From museums to parks and hiking to high street shopping, there’s plenty for the whole family to do near your new home in Rotherham. Located in South Yorkshire, Rotherham is a bustling town with great transport links, ideal if you’re commuting to neighbouring Sheffield or travelling to see friends and family.

A quick history

Evidence of life in Rotherham dates back to the Iron Age, while there are Roman remains around the town. In the Middle Ages, the town grew around the river, and Rotherham quickly became known for its markets, which by the 14th century took place several times a week. Jesus College was built in the 15th century, but closed in 1547 and left to go to ruins.

Industry in Rotherham centred around iron for many centuries, and the discovery of coal brought big changes to the area during the Industrial Revolution. Inland waterways were built for better transportation, and the iron and steel industries continued to boom until the 20th century. Rotherham was also known for flour milling, right up until the early 21st century.

Business and industry

Rotherham is home to a number of big businesses, including Beatson Clark & Co glass manufacturers who have been in the town for more than 250 years. Manufacturing is still important in the area, with companies including Rolls Royce and Sandvik Cormorant based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

Other employers in and around Rotherham include Maplin Electronics, New York Bagel (UK), Morphy Richards and Norton Finance.

Attractions in and around the town include Rotherham Minster, Clifton Park Museum and the Civic Theatre and Arts Centre, while the kids will love visiting the Magna Science Adventure Centre and the South Yorkshire Transport Museum.

If you’re a football fan, you can watch Rotherham United play their home matches at New York Stadium. Rotherham Titans rugby team play at Clifton Lane, while sporting facilities in the local area include Awesome Walls Climbing Centre and Rotherham Golf Club.

For a breath of fresh air, you can take the kids to play at Clifton Park, wander through the grounds of Boston Castle, or go hiking in the Peak District National Park nearby. Other attractions in and around Rotherham include Minster Gardens, Wincobank Hill and Woolley Woods.
