A quick history
Otley began life as a Saxon settlement, although archaeologists have also discovered artefacts from the Bronze Age around the town, including carvings at Knotties Stone. In the 13th century the archbishops, who owned the manor, sold burgage plots to attract more people to the town.
The market in Otley dates back to the early 1200s and continues to this day. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, a number of mills were built in the local area and employed a large number of people, especially after the Wharfedale Printing Machine was invented in the town.
Business and industry
Although Otley is historically a mill and market town, today employers in the area span a wide range of industries, especially as there are excellent transport links into Leeds where company headquarters include Asda, Jet2.com, Tetley’s Brewery and The Yorkshire Bank. Sky Betting and Gaming, GHD, Capita and Yorkshire Television are also based in the city.
Things to do in the area
Otley has a lively community with lots going on in the local area, from the regular market to the monthly Farmer’s Market and annual events such as the Otley Folk Festival and the Victorian Fayre. If you enjoy a little retail therapy, the town is home to a number of great independent boutiques as well as cafes and restaurants.
There are lots of green spaces in the town, perfect for a relaxing walk or a family picnic, from Wharfe Meadows Park to the nearby Gallows Hill Nature Reserve and Otley Chevin. If you want to get some exercise outdoors, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are only a short drive away from the town. For hikers, there’s an eight-day long walking festival in the town each June.
If you’re living in Otley with a family, there are lots of child-friendly days out in the local area including Ilkley Toy Museum, Harewood House, Shipley Glen Cable Tramway and the Royal Armouries Museum.
Travel and commuting
If you’re a commuter, Otley has good transport links to nearby towns and cities, along with frequent bus services. There’s no train station in the town itself, but Menston Station is close-by with services to Leeds and beyond.
The journey to Leeds from Otley takes 30 minutes by car, while Harrogate is slightly closer with a journey time of 20 minutes. Bradford is 30 minutes away, York can be reached in 50 minutes, and Sheffield is one hour 10 minutes away by car.
If you’re going to London, the best way to travel is by train from Leeds with a journey time of two hours 10 minutes to King’s Cross. For journeys abroad, Leeds Bradford Airport is only 10 minutes away from Otley by car or taxi.
