A quick history

Malton dates back to the Roman era when a settlement grew alongside a Fort and the River Derwent. After the Norman invasion, Malton Castle was built and later visited by Richard the Lionheart, Edward II and Robert the Bruce. You can now visit the site at Castle Garden.

The Town Hall was built during the 18th century and used by local farmers as a butter market. The Assembly Rooms opened in 1814, and the local railway connected Malton to nearby towns and cities in the mid 19th century, bringing more wealth to the area.

Malton is home to a number of small food producers, while employers in nearby York include; Nestle UK, the City of York Council and the York Health Services Trust. Plaxton and McCain are based in Scarborough, within commuting distance of the town.
