A quick history
The history of Frome dates back to Roman times, and in 2010 a hoard of 3rd century coins were discovered buried in a field close to the town. During Saxon times a monastery was built, and by the time the Domesday Book was written, Frome was one of the wealthiest places in Somerset.
Hales Castle was built after the Normans arrived in Britain, but only the earthworks can be seen today. During the 15th century Frome manufactured woollen cloth, which saw the town prosper even more. Later a bell foundry was established in the town, and became one of Frome’s biggest employers.
Business and industry
Although the last wool mill closed in the 1960s, Frome still has a proud manufacturing heritage with printing and metal-working still part of the local economy to this day. Most people who live in Frome commute for work, to cities such as Bath, Bristol and Warminster. Some of the biggest employers in Bath include Rotork PLC and Wessex Water, while Bristol is home to Aardman Animations, Aon Hewitt and the Department for Work and Pensions.
Things to do in the area
There’s lots to see and do in Frome, from shopping at The Frome independent monthly market, to browsing the exhibitions at Rook Lane Arts and seeing a show at Frome Memorial Theatre. The town also has a lively calendar, with a large number of annual events including the Frome and Agricultural Cheese Show, Frome Festival and Frome Christmas Extravaganza.
Other places of interest close to Frome include Nunney Castle, Shearwater Lake, Farleigh Hungerford Castle and East Somerset Railway. If you have children, Longleat Safari Park is close by, where you can see giraffes, rhinos, tigers, monkeys and much more.

Travel and commuting
Frome has good transport links by road and rail, ideal if you’re commuting to nearby towns and cities. Bath is 30 minutes away from the town by car, or 40 minutes by train, while Bristol can be reached in 55 minutes by car or one hour by train. Warminster is much closer, just a 20-minute drive from Frome along the A362.
If you’re travelling to London, the train from Frome to London Paddington takes just two hours 10 minutes with a change at Bath Spa. For holidays or business trips abroad, Bristol Airport is 50 minutes away by car.
