In Hampshire, Swanwick is a village with a small, friendly community close to the harbour cities of Portsmouth and Southampton. Lying east of the River Hamble in the borough of Fareham, Swanwick offers a convenient commute into neighbouring cities.
Places of interest
Swanwick is close to both countryside and cultural sights in Portsmouth and Southampton. Swanwick Lakes - with its woodland and grassland - is managed by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and has miles of nature trails to explore.
The volunteer-run Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum is also located in Swanwick, giving a unique insight into life at the Victorian steam-powered brickworks. Exhibits including steam engines, the old kiln and hands-on make a brick activities.
A short drive from the village, you’ll come across the Royal Victoria Country Park with its sensory gardens, coastal walks and tours of the Chapel Tower with views over the water. The Forest of Bere offers walking and cycling routes through woodland and grassland, while Itchen Valley Country Park has 440 acres of Green Flag parkland.
For kids and adults alike, Manor Farm Country Park gives a peek into life at a historic working farm, while Rock Up Indoor Climbing in nearby Whiteley has 26 climbs for ages four years and up.
When it comes to sport, Swanwick is spoiled for choice. St Mary’s Stadium is home to Southampton FC, and Fratton Park hosts Portsmouth FC’s fixtures. Hampshire County Cricket Club play at the Ageas Bowl in West End, just a 15 minute drive away, and Hayling Island is the home of watersports including sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Whiteley Primary School, whose catchment area encompasses Swanwick, is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. For higher education, the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University and the University of Portsmouth are all close by.
Swanwick is situated just north of the M27, which runs from Portsmouth to Southampton. It also has its own railway station, which is a 20 minute walk or five minute drive to the south of the town.
Portsmouth is within easy reach of Swanwick. A 15-20 minute journey along the M27 will take you into the city, or alternatively it’s just a 15 minute train journey from Swanwick Station to Cosham. Southampton is equally close - taking 20 minutes by car on the M27 or 17 minutes from Swanwick Station to Southampton Central.
Swanwick’s position on the south coast gives it easy access to London. A train journey into the capital takes around two hours, travelling via Havant. Alternatively a one hour 45 minute drive on the A3 will take you into the capital.
The nearest airport is Southampton Airport, taking around 14 minutes to reach.
