Newton Abbot is a Victorian railway town close to Devon. Near the Teign Estuary, and at the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Newton Abbot has many lovely sights to explore.
The town has great transport links with easy access to larger towns and cities, including Exeter and Plymouth, making new homes in Newton Abbot a great choice.
With the Passmore Edwards Public Library, the town’s cinema - the Alexandra Theatre - and a local leisure centre, there’s lots of entertainment in the town. Newton Abbot Hospital has a minor injuries unit, x-ray facilities, paediatric therapy and a maternity unit.
Places of interest
Newton Abbot is just a few miles east of Dartmoor National Park, meaning the countryside is within easy reach. In the town itself, you’ll find Victorian Gardens alongside the River Lemon, while Courtenay Park, Decoy Country Park and Bakers Park are all close by.
Newton Abbot Racecourse is one of the town’s most well-known attractions, with race days hosted regularly throughout the spring, summer and autumn. For children, Prickly Ball Farm has its own Hedgehog Rescue Centre, while the Newton Abbot Town & GWR Museum is also great for families.
Tucker’s Maltings Brewery offers tours through historic ale brewing methods, while The Cider Bar offers a taste of real south country cider.
The annual Cheese & Onion Fayre is a fun, traditional family event complete with live music and locally made food.
Newton Abbot’s Stokeinteignhead School and Blackpool Church of England Primary School are both rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. For higher education, Exeter and Plymouth both have their own universities.
Newton Abbot has great transport links by rail and road. At 20 miles away, Exeter can be reached within a 30 minute car journey or 35 minutes by train. Plymouth is 40 minutes away, by both car and train.
Newton Abbot railway station also serves popular seaside towns. A 10 minute ride will take you to Torquay, and you’ll reach Paignton if you travel 5 minutes further.
For air travel, Exeter International Airport is just 20 miles north west.
