A quick history
Bognor Regis dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, when the town was little more than a landing and fishing village. It wasn’t until the 18th century that Bognor Regis started to be known as a seaside resort, and today it is one of the most well-known ‘staycation’ destinations in the UK.
There are a number of historic sites in and around Bognor Regis, including part of the floating Mulberry Harbour which was meant to be used by allied forces during the D-Day landings but ended up washed between Aldwick and Bognor Regis. The wreck can still be seen at low tide.
One of the most important events in the town’s history was the building of the pier in 1865, followed by the opening of the famous Butlins resort in 1960. The town is still popular as a seaside resort to this day, attracting lots of tourists to the town throughout the year.
Business and industry
There are a number of big employers close to Bognor Regis, so your commute will be kept short and sweet. The Rolls Royce headquarters are in Westhampnett, just a short drive from Bognor Regis, while the Body Shop is based in Littlehampton. Other local employers include the University of Chichester, Chichester College, West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council.
Things to do in the area
One of the most well-known attractions in Bognor Regis is the popular Butlins resort, but there’s plenty of other things to see and do in the town. Waterloo Square Crazy Golf is a great place to spend an hour or two, while Hotham Park has its own boating lake and miniature railway. The Victorian pier is one of the town’s most iconic attractions, where you can take in views of the beach and the coastline.
At Bognor Museum you can discover more about the town’s past, while The Base indoor skate park is popular with children and adults alike. Attractions just a short drive away from the town include Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, South Downs Planetarium Science Centre, The Chichester Ship Canal, Arundel Wetland Centre and Littlehampton Museum. For a breath of fresh air, head to Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
There are also a number of events in the town throughout the year, including the free community music and arts festival, Bognor ROX, and Rockaway Beach Festival at the Butlins resort.
Travel and commuting
Bognor Regis is around 35 minutes away from the city of Portsmouth travelling by car via the A27, or 40 minutes by train with a change at Barnham. Chichester is just 20 minutes away by either car or train, while you can get to Worthing in 35 minutes via the A259. Both Brighton and Southampton are around one hour away by car.
If you’re commuting into the capital, there are regular half-hourly train services to London with the journey from Bognor Regis to London taking around one hour 40 minutes with Southern Rail. The nearest airport is in Southampton a 50 minute drive away, while Gatwick is only slightly further away with a journey time of around one hour five minutes.
