The place name Burnopfield is believed to date back to Saxon and Viking times, with links to languages spoken by both tribes of people. High Friarside Hospice was opened in the early 14th century for people suffering with leprosy, but it was demolished just over a century later. Burnopfield is historically within a coal mining area, but there was no colliery in the town, with waggonways running through the town for transportation instead.

To get to Newcastle, the journey from Burnopfield takes 20 minutes by car, while you can get to Durham in 25 minutes and Sunderland in 35 minutes. If you’re going to London, the train from Newcastle takes three hours.
