Midway between London and Birmingham, Northampton is a large town centred around the market square, with a history of shoe making. It is now a major location for manufacturing companies, and considered the home of British motorsport with Silverstone close by.

Local facilities

Northampton has a number of parks, including the Racecourse and Abingdon Park. There are several public libraries, including the Grade II listed Northampton Central Library, while Billing Aquadrome offers a range of activities including swimming, fishing and go-karting.

Northampton has a great theatre scene, including the Royal & Derngate Theatre complex, The Deco, and the smaller Northampton Playhouse. The Errol Flynn Filmhouse is an independent cinema, and The Roadmender is popular for live music.

The Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, gives you a look at Northampton’s culture, paying homage to the town’s shoemaking history. The town itself has some lovely architecture to enjoy, including Northampton Castle, The Holy Sepulchre, Northampton Cathedral and the Express Lift Tower.

Each year, the town hosts a number of events including Northampton Carnival - with colourful parades through the streets - and Northampton Music Festival, which takes place across three days and six outdoor stages.

Northampton has a great sports scene, with Premiership rugby union club Northampton Saints, Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and Northampton Town FC. The Silverstone race circuit is just 15 miles south of the town.

Educational facilities

The University of Northampton is one of the UK’s top 100 universities. There are also a number of high-achieving schools in the area, including Northampton School for Boys and Northampton School for Girls, which was the first in England to be rated as a Specialist Music College. 

Transport links

Accessible via the M1 from junctions 15, 15a and 16, Northampton is within quick reach of other major UK destinations by car. The town is an hour drive from Birmingham via the M1 and M6, one hour from Oxford via A roads, and one hour and 10 minutes from Cambridge. Milton Keynes is just half an hour along the M1.

Northampton train station links the town to Birmingham New Street within one hour. Services to London are frequent, and also take just one hour.

The town is one hour and 10 minutes by car from Heathrow Airport, and one hour from Birmingham Airport.
