A quick history
Hucknall dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, and by the 19th century was a coal mining town connected to a freight railway line and later the Great Northern Railway. During the Second World War Hucknall was an important RAF base, and by the 1950s the town was the test site of a Rolls Royce jet rig. It was a colliery town until the 1980s, when - like in many areas of the UK - the mines were closed.
Business and industry
There are a number of big employers close to Hucknall, including Boots UK, Experian, Capital One, Paul Smith Group and Pendragon in Nottingham, and Sports Direct in Mansfield. Nottingham is also home to the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and the Queen’s Medical Centre teaching hospital.
Things to do in the area
Hucknall is home to a number of shops and cafes, along with a historic church and regular traditional markets. Newstead Abbey is nearby, while other historic sites within easy reach of the town include Papplewick Pumping Station, Nottingham Castle and the City of Caves.
If you’re moving to the area with a young family, the little ones will love meeting the animals at Floralands Farm Park, riding their bike at Bestwood Country Park and learning at Green's Windmill and Science Centre.
Other places of interest nearby include Nottingham City Golf Club, Nottingham Climbing Centre and Wollaton Hall, Gardens and Deer Park.
Travel and commuting
Whether you’re commuting to work or travelling to see friends and family, it’s good to know that Hucknall is well connected by both road and rail. Nottingham is only a 20 minute drive or a 15 minute train journey from the town, while the journey to Derby takes just 30 minutes by car. Leicester is 45 minutes away, while Sheffield can be reached in one hour by car.
For journeys to the capital, Hucknall is only one hour 45 minutes from Nottingham by train. If you’re going on holiday, East Midlands Airport is a 30 minute drive away from the town, so your trip can get off to a quick and easy start.
