A quick history
Brixworth is home to one of the most impressive examples of an Anglo-Saxon church in the UK, All Saints’ Church, which dates back to the 7th century. The town was once a stop-off for travellers making their way up and down the country, with a number of coaching inns in the local area. By the 19th century, a Poor Law Union was established, but it was controversially associated with a nearby workhouse.
Historically, industry in the area has centred on quarrying iron ore, and over the 19th and early 20th centuries a number of quarries were opened and closed. The railway line opened in the 1850s, but by the 1960s the station was closed to passengers. The old line is now the Brampton Valley Way.
