Outdoor sports in East Yorkshire

Sport-enthusiast? You’ve come to the right place. East Yorkshire offers endless possibilities for golf, football, cricket, rugby, and you name it. Whether you’re visiting from neighbouring Leeds, Harrogate or Sheffield and are looking to test your skills at any of these disciplines, here we explore the most popular outdoor activities across the county.

Golf

Been a golfer your whole life? Golf is one of East Yorkshire’s most practised sports, with various courses and competitions available. Having proudly staged the Ryder Cup on three occasions, you can join one of the Ryder Cup courses either in Lindrick or Ganton, a little further afield. If you prefer exercising along the coast, the Hornsea Golf Club could be what you’re after. It is suitable for all golfers’ abilities and combines activities for the younger ones.

Football

As one of the most beloved and practised sports of all time, it’s no surprise that football is big in East Yorkshire. There is a team for every level here, from amateur to professional. The county’s most famous club is Hull City, founded in 1904 and currently competing in the EFL. If your kids’ passion is to become football players, East Yorkshire is the birthplace of this major sport.

Cricket

Cricket is undoubtedly one of England’s most popular sports and a firm favourite among people, both amateurs and professionals. The Junior Cricket League is famous among young talents and provides a platform for them to demonstrate their skills as future County Age Group players.

Rugby

Rugby League is Yorkshire born and bred and is still a beloved sport by many today. Six top-class clubs compete here, including the Hull Kingstone Rovers. Rugby Union is also famous in East Yorkshire, although it doesn’t enjoy the same success as its counterpart. However, both of them provide great matches and plenty of adrenaline to keep everyone entertained.

Horse Racing

Nowhere in the UK is horse racing as popular as in Yorkshire. Nine top-class courses are held here, holding over 170 meetings every year. Beverley hosts one of the six flat racing, which has occured since 1690. Beverley racecourse combines a stunning location, smart facilities and delicious local food to enjoy the race even more.
