A quick history

Pontyclun was a just small farming community up until the 19th century, when the area was transformed by coal mining and industrialisation in South Wales. The railway arrived in the area in the 1850s, and by the 1870s Pontyclun was home to a number of collieries. Today, the area is popular with commuters, and although the collieries are now closed, there are a number of big employers nearby.

Business and industry

If you’re planning to look for a job after moving to Pontyclun, it’s good to know there are plenty of employers in the local area. The Royal Mint, the South Wales Fire & Rescue Service Headquarters and the Leekes Head Office are both nearby in Llantrisant, while major employers in Cardiff include Admiral Group, GE Aircraft Engine Services, Arriva Trains Wales and moneysupermarket.com.

Things to do in the area

Pontyclun is home to a number of small shops and cafes, while attractions nearby include the open air St Fagans National Museum of History, and The Royal Mint Experience. Cardiff is only a short drive or train journey away from the village, where you can go shopping at St David’s Shopping Centre, browse the independent stores in the arcades, or explore Cardiff Castle.

If you love the great outdoors, you can go for a walk at Rhondda Heritage Park, take the kids to Dyffryn Gardens, or take a walk along the beach at Porthcawl. Other places of interest nearby include McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in Bridgend, Castell Coch near Cardiff, and Cottrell Park Golf Resort.

Travel and commuting

Whether you’re commuting to Cardiff or visiting other parts of the UK, it’s good to know that Pontyclun has good transport connections by both road and rail. The journey to Cardiff takes 25 minutes by either train or car, while the trip to Bridgend takes around 25 minutes by car or 30 minutes by train. Pontypridd and Newport are less than half an hour’s drive away.

If you’re venturing to London, you can get to  the capital in two hours 40 minutes by train with one change in Newport. Cardiff Airport is only a 30 minute drive away from the village, so your next holiday can get off to a quick and easy start.
