The history of the area
Caerwent’s history is rooted in Roman times, when it was a market town known as ‘Venta Silurum’. Back then, around the year 75AD, the Silures tribe built the town with large defensive walls, which can still be seen today and still reach up to 5 metres in some places. At the time it was one of the largest settlements in Wales with around 3,000 residents in the 2nd century, and was an important thoroughfare for travellers between Caerleon and Gloucester. A couple of centuries later and Caerwent was in decline, and today is a small rural village.
Over the years there have been many archaeological digs in Caerwent, uncovering some mosaics, metalwork, Christian burials and a Roman temple. In the 20th century, Caerwent was used as a storage station for the air force during the Second World War, and has since been used as an army training location.
