A quick history
The biggest town in North Lanarkshire, Cumbernauld, dates back to the Roman era, when there was a fort built along the Antonine Wall on the edge of the Roman empire. Cumbernauld Castle is one of the most recognisable historic sites in the town, built as a motte and bailey and eventually becoming a place for Scottish royalty including Mary Queen of Scots.
Cumbernauld House was built in the 18th century, and the grounds are now a park. Over the centuries the area around Cumbernauld was used for farming, weaving and quarrying. It grew quickly after the Second World War, after many were relocated following heavy bombing in Glasgow. Today Cumbernauld is the main town of North Lanarkshire and a popular commuter region.
Business and industry
North Lanarkshire is home to a number of major employers including North Lanarkshire Council, soft drink makers A.G.Barr, production company Wardpark Studios and manufacturing firm Yaskawa Electric. Many people living in the region commute to Glasgow for work, where employers include the University of Glasgow, the NHS Credit Union and Scottish Power.
