Whether you’re browsing modern art, watching the local football team or visiting the planetarium, there’s no shortage of top attractions close to your new home in Teesside. Located in the northeast of England, the region encompasses the towns of Middlesbrough, Redcar, Stockton-on-Tees and Billingham. It’s home to coastal landscapes, bustling town centres, and everything in between.

A quick history

Middlesbrough, the largest town in Teesside, dates back to Saxon times when a settlement grew around a chapel linked with Whitby Abbey. Only a small number of people lived in the area until the early 19th century when a port was developed on the River Tees.

By the 1830s, Middlesbrough had been connected to the railways and the town soon began to grow rapidly, eventually overtaking Stockton-on-Tees as the region’s most important port. Iron ore was mined in the local area from the mid-19th century, and later that century the Bessemer Steel plant was opened.

Teesside is also known for bridge construction, for example, the Transporter Bridge and the Newport Lifting Bridge, which was opened in the 1930s and was the first vertical lifting bridge in the country. A local company went on to design the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia.

Today Middlesbrough is still at the heart of Teesside, with neighbouring towns and villages making this a vibrant and exciting place to live on the north-east coast.

Business and industry

Teesside is home to a number of big employers across the private and public sector, including; Teesside University, UK Steel Enterprise, INEOS Nitriles (UK), Quorn Foods and Cleveland Cable Company in Middlesbrough, Lotte Chemical UK in Redcar, and Tioxide Europe Ltd in Billingham. Billingham Manufacturing Plant, a former ICI site, is now owned by CF Fertilisers UK.
