NAMING DORRINGTON GARDEN IS CHILD'S PLAY
Thu, 01 May 2008

Usually the most taxing thing a child has to think of is a name for is a toy or pet, but David Wilson Homes North West recently decided to support local learning and set primary school children in Liverpool the challenge of naming its development in Roscommon Street.
Gary Mills, managing director of David Wilson Homes North West, commented: “We pride ourselves on understanding the importance of forging strong links with the community; as part of this we are keen to work with local schools to assist children with their learning. This is why we approached Faith Primary School and asked if they would be interested in getting involved with this novel naming task.
“We believe it not only gives pupils a great opportunity to learn more about housebuilding and regeneration in Liverpool, but imagine the kind of buzz the winner will get when passing the development knowing they named it.”
The children in years five to ten were given a pack by David Wilson Homes containing various details on the location and history of the development; all the youngsters had to do to enter was to write down their chosen name on an entry card and explain why it would suit the site.
After a lot of deliberations by the judges, year 5 pupil Laurence Patrick Howarth who came up with, Dorrington Gardens, was chosen as the winner. He carried out some investigative work and discovered that Dorrington Street used to run through the heart of the new development, giving him the first part of the name whilst the inspiration for Gardens came from the Everton Nature Gardens which are located opposite the site.
Headteacher Sister Moira from Faith Primary School commented: “Taking part in this scheme with David Wilson Homes fitted in perfectly with projects on construction and regeneration that the children have been recently working on. It has given us a real opportunity to take the curriculum out of the classroom and to engage pupils with their school work in a fun and exciting way.”
Another part of the challenge involved a drawing competition where the children created a vision of their dream home. They let their imagination run wild on paper, entering pictures with special areas for pets, gigantic games rooms and some even had excellent green credentials. The winning drawing by Megan Rachel Royds and pictures created by two runners up, Ryan Jones and Lucy Sedgwick now feature on the hoarding at Dorrington Gardens for all the community to see.
Shoreh Bowler, sales director for David Wilson Homes North West, comments: “Visitors to Dorrington Gardens love the new hoardings and they provide a real talkability factor. Homehunters always comment on how stunning the boards look and are really interested in learning the story behind the naming of the development.
“I have been really impressed by how talented the youngsters at Faith School are, I only wish we could have chosen more than three pictures to go on display. It was such a tough job narrowing the finalists down as all of the drawings were absolutely fantastic.”
The development
Dorrington Gardens is the first development to be launched from a housing market renewal partnership between David Wilson Homes and Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool Housing Trust and New Heartlands.
The development comprises 69 homes, which as part of the regeneration partnership were initially only available for pre-release to local residents. Homes include a selection of two and three bedroom houses, a number of which have already been reserved by registered social landlords, the Liverpool Housing Trust.
Situated opposite a children’s play area and near to a selection of nature walks and a stunning area of woodland, Dorrington Gardens is ideally placed for family living. Within walking distance of Liverpool city centre there is a fantastic range of amenities close by, plus with attractions such as the Albert Docks, Liverpool and Everton football grounds and the Liverpool Echo Arena within easy reach, you will never be short of something to do in your leisure time.
