Tips on moving

Take some of the stress out of moving house.

The dos and don’ts

Moving house doesn’t have to be as exasperating as you think. Take some guidance from Property journalist Cheryl Markosky and her top moving tips:

Removal companies

The house builder selling you your new home might offer removal services as a package deal. They will at least be able to recommend good moving companies and can give you a comprehensive moving checklist.

Changing your address

Rather than spending days on end calling up companies to update your address, there are now websites that will do the job for you. Try moveme.com and iammoving.com. You’ll also find names of removal firms, useful advice and moveme.com even send you a free moving gift box!

De-cluttering

Removal firms estimate the cost of moving by how many items they have to transport, so less clutter could mean substantial savings.

Storage

If you decide to store some items, first ask yourself if you really do want them.

Be prepared

Ask the house builder about the best way to move into your new home. If you’re in an apartment many will help by padding a lift especially for the move.

Your first night

Treat yourself to a takeaway or try a local restaurant on the first night in your new home. How better to get to know a new neighbourhood
